India Elevates Steel Sector with 'Made in India' Branding Initiative

India's steel industry is poised for a significant leap onto the global stage with the introduction of 'Made in India' branding on steel products, a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing the sector's visibility and standardizing quality. Spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and implemented by the Ministry of Steel in collaboration with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), this initiative marks a milestone in India's journey towards bolstering domestic manufacturing across various industries.

The initiative, first announced last year and now nearing full implementation, has garnered substantial participation from Indian steel producers (ISPs). Currently, approximately 80% of ISPs have already affixed the 'Made in India' label to their products, with the remainder expected to follow suit by the end of this month. This branding not only aims to make Indian steel products more appealing to global buyers but also guarantees standardized quality assurance, thereby bolstering consumer confidence and market competitiveness.

Former Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia,, now the Telecom Minister, underscored the significance of this initiative during its inception, highlighting that it would ensure uniform quality across all Indian steel products. The integration of a QR code along with the branding allows for detailed product information and authentication, further enhancing transparency and traceability in the market.

The Ministry of Steel's proactive approach in implementing this branding exercise sets a precedent as the first ministry to introduce such a unified branding strategy for Indian-made steel. This initiative underscores India's strong manufacturing potential and aims to position the country as a reliable and quality-conscious global supplier.

Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister, H.D. Kumaraswamy, reaffirmed the government's commitment to transforming India into a global manufacturing hub under PM Modi's leadership. Kumaraswamy emphasized the importance of increasing steel production nationwide to spur economic growth and generate employment opportunities, aligning with the government's broader vision for industrial development and self-reliance.
