India’s biggest domestic airline in India, Indigo, crossed a significant milestone in its history by attaining 1,900 flights per day on its 17th anniversary. IndiGo's 17th anniversary is a testament to the unwavering support and trust that our consumers are placing in us, said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo. “These achievements over the years have been made possible by the unwavering dedication and professionalism of our 6E stars, for which I would like to thank each and every one of them sincerely,” he added.
The airline has come a long way from launching its inaugural flight in 2006 to etching its name in history on June 19 this year by bagging the largest order in aviation history of 500 A320 aircraft. The order solidified the company’s position as the airline with the biggest order in the industry. IndiGo unveiled its first A321, a longer version of the A320 aircraft, on December 27, 2018. Just a month before this deal, the airline had set a new record with the maximum number of 3 lac customers per day in May. The airline last year added Ras-Al-Khaimah, UAE as its 100th destination on September 22, shortly after launching Bahrain as the 99th destination. Inching a step closer to sustainability, the low-cost carrier operated its maiden (Sustainable aviation fuel) SAF fuel flight on February 18, 2022, from TLS to Delhi. India is trying to cut emissions from the aviation sector, oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced in May. The country plans to mandate the use of 1% of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for domestic airlines by 2025.
The airline ventured into the regional connectivity scheme Udan (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme when it launched the Kochi to Hubballi route in January 2018, making air travel accessible to more regions. Under the Udan scheme, financial incentives from the Centre, state governments and airport operators are extended to selected airlines to encourage operations from unserved and underserved airports and keep airfares affordable. IndiGo is amongst the fastest-growing low-cost carriers in the world. “The company has a simple philosophy: offer fares that are affordable, flights that are on time, and provide a courteous and hassle-free travel experience across its unparalleled network,” says the company. With its fleet of over 300 aircraft, the airline is operating well 1900 daily flights and connecting 79 domestic destinations and will soon further grow its footprint to 32 international destinations.
